At Vetdiet® we are passionate pet parents and we care deeply for the health and wellbeing of pets. We have a strong policy of not supporting activities that would cause harm to animals and do not partner with those who do. From time to time, we need to validate the performance of our foods or develop new nutritional benefits for pets. To do this, we will collect data from feeding pets, sometimes our own and sometimes from our partners. We always ensure that pets will never be harmed.
We are always cautious of the impact that we make on our planet. We work to ensure that we are making the best decisions to benefit the planet for future generations. You may notice that we support responsible feeding of pets to help minimize food wastage and to help promote the health of pets. We believe in feeding pets appropriately, and never over formulating precious resources like protein.

No. We do not offer prescription pet food.
We are passionate about responsible treating and design our treats to be fed at a low caloric rate. We recommend following the feeding guideline on the back of our treat packages to feed at a healthy rate. It is best not to exceed 10% of your pet’s daily caloric intake in treats and you should reduce your pet’s main meal to account for the added calories.
The following is the definition of “natural” according to the main regulatory agency for pet foods: Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) – A feed or ingredient derived solely from plant, animal or mined sources, either in its unprocessed state or having been subject to physical processing, heat processing, rendering, purification, extraction, hydrolysis, enzymolysis or fermentation, but not having been produced by or subject to a chemically synthetic process and not containing any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts as might occur unavoidably in good manufacturing practices.
This definition is not only very broad, but also open to interpretation. Therefore, we have created higher standards for our definition of natural.
Vetdiet® standards for natural foods include high-quality ingredients that are nutritionally consistent. We use chicken, lamb or salmon as the primary ingredient in each food. We source whole ingredients which are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. We do not use additives or fillers such as artificial ingredients, colors, flavors or dyes. We only use natural preservatives in our food. We use minimally processed ingredients such as fresh meats and whole grains. We ensure that we use highly digestible ingredients and use minimal processing to ensure our foods provide the best nutrition possible.
Trace nutrients are vitamins, minerals and amino acids, which are all essential for proper nutrition.
Vitamins and minerals are added in our pet food to supply the amount needed by pets from where it is lacking in natural ingredients and to supplement those lost in the process. Some vitamins and minerals are also added to provide additional functional benefits.
Nutritional requirements change as dogs and cats age. Nutrient needs are highest in puppyhood and kittenhood to support growth and development, decrease through adulthood, then increase again in senior pets. Puppies and kittens have specific nutritional needs to support growth. As puppies and kittens mature into adulthood, their metabolic processes change from growth to maintenance, and as they reach their senior years, more physiological changes occur such as a decrease in nutrient absorption. We recommend following the age guidelines and switch your pet to a senior food before you start seeing the obvious signs of aging. For more information, visit the Vetdiet® Academy.
We recommend consulting your veterinarian to determine if your pet is at a healthy weight for his age, gender and breed.
We recommend that you consult your veterinarian to develop a plan that is best suited to your pet’s needs, focusing on portion control, proper nutrition and exercise.
Kitten food is specifically formulated to meet the increased metabolic needs of kittens. Our Vetdiet® kitten dry food contains the right levels of nutrients to promote optimal growth. DHA is also added to our kitten dry food to help contribute to healthy brain development. Our adult dry foods are formulated to meet the maintenance needs of adult cats, with each of our formula targeting different authentic benefits for your cat’s specific needs.
Puppy food is specially formulated for the increased metabolic needs of puppies. Our Vetdiet® puppy foods bring the right nutrients, in the right amounts for the optimal growth of puppies. DHA is also added to our puppy dry foods as it helps with healthy brain development. Our adult dry dog foods are specially formulated to meet the maintenance needs of adult dogs, with each of our formula designed for a specific breed size.
Dogs have the widest ranges in body size within a species. Not surprisingly, this also means there are differences in physiology depending on size. For example, larger dogs have increased mineral loss through the gut and slower digestive tracts, which contributes to more frequent occurrences of loose stools. The right balance of fiber is critical to help maintain digestive health and stool quality for large breed dogs. Additionally, smaller dogs have a higher metabolic rate, and therefore need more calories per pound of bodyweight compared to larger dogs. Targeted levels of protein, fat and calories support differences in metabolism. At Vetdiet®, we target specific nutrients and functional ingredients to provide the best nutrition possible for your dog based on breed size.
Yes. Fat is an essential nutrient for cats. Not only is fat a great energy source, it is also involved in carrying fat soluble vitamins, cell membrane functionality, insulation and protection of organs, as well as giving your cat a healthy skin and coat.
At Vetdiet®, we believe that treats can be part of a healthy cat or dog diet, so long as it is done responsibly. For more information on responsible feeding and responsible treating, click here
The switch needs to be gradual. Start the transition by feeding your pet a mixture containing 75% of the old food and 25% Vetdiet®. Then, over 7 to 10 days increase the relative proportion of Vetdiet® pet food until the transition is complete.
Cats are considered to be kittens until 12 months old, and that would be an appropriate time to start feeding your cat an adult maintenance diet.
Cats are considered senior when they reach 7–-10 years of age. It is recommended that you don’t wait until seeing signs of aging to start your cat on a senior diet.
Depending on their breed size, puppies grow at different rates. Small breed dogs become adults at 10 months, medium- breed dogs at 12 months, and large breed puppies at 18 months. It is recommended to follow these guidelines when deciding to transition from puppy food to adult food.
The Dry portfolio of formulas has a 16 month16-month shelf life. For optimum freshness keep the product stored in a re-sealed bag or container in a dry environment at room temperature.
The wet formulas have a three-year shelf life.
All treats have an expiration date and for best results we recommend feeding them before this date.
Storing the product in a cool (room temperature), dry environment sealed in a container or re-sealing the bag will keep the product fresh. Extreme cold, heat, and moisture are not conducive to the product shelf life or performance.
Keep the wet formulas in room temperature, dry environment, away from extreme heat and cold. Once opened the product should be covered and stored in a refrigerator and used within 24 hours of opening.
All Vetdiet® packaging consists of food grade materials and we validate the quality and food safety of all of our packaging.
For the dry products, the best before or expiration date is on the back side. For the cans, it is on the bottom of the can.
We run a variety of promotions to reward our loyal consumers. We do have coupons on occasion along with other valuable offers.

We have a strong animal welfare policy where we responsibly balance the number amount of feeding trials with analytical testing of food. We use a combination of nutrient analyses and a variety of feeding trials. We conduct specific nutrient tests on every batch of food produced to ensure it meets our specifications before it is released. We conduct complete nutrient analyses on every new formula created. Periodically, we conduct nutrient testing of our products to select nutrients. We have a specific set of feeding trials that we perform when developing new formulas. These consist of digestibility, palatability, stool quality and urinary RSS on our cat formulas. Additionally, we have a long- term partnership with the Mira foundation which feeds our products to hundreds of dogs under the care of their in-house veterinarian, Dr. Paule Jacques who is a member of our Health & Nutrition Advisory Board. This allows us to constantly monitor the performance of our food. To learn more about Mira foundation, you can visit their website here.
We go above and beyond industry standards to ensure our food is of the highest quality and meets the most stringent safety standards. Here are some of our quality control measures:
We partner with premium pet food kitchens located in Canada and the United States. They manufacture our super-premium dry, canned, freeze-dried and treat recipes to our exact specifications. We look forward to hosting your group, once our brand new facility is open.
We can provide nutrient analysis and digestibility values for any of our formulas.
We can provide the calorie content by gram, can, cup, or treat for each of our recipes. This information is also available on our packaging, website, and brochures.
Our Health & Nutrition Advisory Board bring many years of research experience to our company and they have published findings in peer-review journals that we use in developing products. We work collaboratively with many groups to conduct research, some on products and some to help us find new health benefits for pets. Our goal is to publish our findings when this brings value to the scientific literature. Much of our product research is specific to the performance of a particular product and as such these results are the type published in peer-review journals. Our research program is a balance between product research and future-focused nutritional research.
