At Vetdiet® we are passionate pet parents and we care deeply for the health and wellbeing of pets. We are always cautious of the impact that we make on our planet. We work to ensure that we are making the best decisions to benefit the planet for future generations. Ingredients FAQs

What does the “natural” label mean?

The following is the definition of “natural” according to the main regulatory agency for pet foods:
Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) – A feed or ingredient derived solely from plant, animal or mined sources, either in its unprocessed state or having been subject to physical processing, heat processing, rendering, purification, extraction, hydrolysis, enzymolysis or fermentation, but not having been produced by or subject to a chemically synthetic process and not containing any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts as might occur unavoidably in good manufacturing practices.

This definition is not only very broad, but also open to interpretation. Therefore, we have created higher standards for our definition of natural.

Vetdiet® standards for natural foods include high-quality ingredients that are nutritionally consistent. We use chicken, lamb or salmon as the primary ingredient in each food. We source whole ingredients which are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. We do not use additives or fillers such as artificial ingredients, colors, flavors or dyes. We only use natural preservatives in our food. We use minimally processed ingredients such as fresh meats and whole grains. We ensure that we use highly digestible ingredients and use minimal processing to ensure our foods provide the best nutrition possible.

What are the “other trace nutrients” found in my dog and cat food?

Trace nutrients are vitamins, minerals and amino acids, which are all essential for proper nutrition.

Why does Vetdiet® add minerals and vitamins to its dog and cat foods?

Vitamins and minerals are added in our pet food to supply the amount needed by pets from where it is lacking in natural ingredients and to supplement those lost in the process. Some vitamins and minerals are also added to provide additional functional benefits.

Health and Nutrition FAQs

Why is it important to buy cat and dog food according to my pet’s life stage?

Nutritional requirements change as dogs and cats age. Nutrient needs are highest in puppyhood and kittenhood to support growth and development, decrease through adulthood, then increase again in senior pets. Puppies and kittens have specific nutritional needs to support growth. As puppies and kittens mature into adulthood, their metabolic processes change from growth to maintenance, and as they reach their senior years, more physiological changes occur such as a decrease in nutrient absorption. We recommend following the age guidelines and switch your pet to a senior food before you start seeing the obvious signs of aging. For more information, visit the Vetdiet® Academy.

How to know if my pet is overweight?

We recommend consulting your veterinarian to determine if your pet is at a healthy weight for his age, gender and breed.

What to do if my pet is overweight?

We recommend that you consult your veterinarian to develop a plan that is best suited to your pet’s needs, focusing on portion control, proper nutrition and exercise.

What is the difference between kitten dry food and adult dry cat food?

Kitten food is specifically formulated to meet the increased metabolic needs of kittens. Our Vetdiet® kitten dry food contains the right levels of nutrients to promote optimal growth. DHA is also added to our kitten dry food to help contribute to healthy brain development. Our adult dry foods are formulated to meet the maintenance needs of adult cats, with each of our formula targeting different authentic benefits for your cat’s specific needs.

What is the difference between puppy dry food and adult dry dog food?

Puppy food is specially formulated for the increased metabolic needs of puppies. Our Vetdiet® puppy foods bring the right nutrients, in the right amounts for the optimal growth of puppies. DHA is also added to our puppy dry foods as it helps with healthy brain development. Our adult dry dog foods are specially formulated to meet the maintenance needs of adult dogs, with each of our formula designed for a specific breed size.

Why is it important to feed my dog according to his or her breed size?

Dogs have the widest ranges in body size within a species. Not surprisingly, this also means there are differences in physiology depending on size. For example, larger dogs have increased mineral loss through the gut and slower digestive tracts, which contributes to more frequent occurrences of loose stools. The right balance of fiber is critical to help maintain digestive health and stool quality for large breed dogs. Additionally, smaller dogs have a higher metabolic rate, and therefore need more calories per pound of bodyweight compared to larger dogs. Targeted levels of protein, fat and calories support differences in metabolism. At Vetdiet®, we target specific nutrients and functional ingredients to provide the best nutrition possible for your dog based on breed size.

Does my cat need to have fat in his or her diet?

Yes. Fat is an essential nutrient for cats. Not only is fat a great energy source, it is also involved in carrying fat soluble vitamins, cell membrane functionality, insulation and protection of organs, as well as giving your cat a healthy skin and coat.

Can treats be part of a healthy cat and dog diet?

At Vetdiet®, we believe that treats can be part of a healthy cat or dog diet, so long as it is done responsibly. For more information on responsible feeding and responsible treating, click here
