Natural Nutrition

As a pet parent, you want the best for your pet and natural pet food is one option to provide quality nutrition. Vetdiet® dog and cat food is formulated beginning with the highest quality natural ingredients to provide the right nutrients in the right amounts for the health of your pet.

What is natural nutrition?

A uniform definition for natural foods has yet to achieve consensus among regulatory agencies, pet food manufacturers, and pet food retailers. Thus, the criteria to judge the merits of natural products are varied and as a result, there is some confusion about what it means to be “natural”.

The following is the definition of “natural” according to the main regulatory agency for pet foods:

Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) — A feed or ingredient derived solely from plant, animal or mined sources, either in its unprocessed state or having been subject to physical processing, heat processing, rendering, purification, extraction, hydrolysis, enzymolysis or fermentation, but not having been produced by or subject to a chemically synthetic process and not containing any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts as might occur unavoidably in good manufacturing practices.

This definition is not only very broad, but also open to interpretation. Therefore, industry leaders in natural nutrition have created higher standards for their definition of natural. These standards better align with pet owner perception of what it means to be natural.

Does Vetdiet offer natural pet food?

Vetdiet® offers pet food that is natural, using minimally processed ingredients. Vetdiet standards for natural foods include high-quality ingredients that are nutritionally consistent. We use fresh chicken, lamb or salmon as the primary ingredient in each food. We source whole ingredients which are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

We do not use additives or fillers such as artificial ingredients, colors, flavors or dyes. We only use natural preservatives in our food. We use minimally processed ingredients such as fresh meats and whole grains. We ensure that we use highly digestible ingredients and use minimal processing to ensure our foods provide the best nutrition possible.

How are natural foods preserved?

Natural antioxidants like Vitamin E and Vitamin C are used to prevent rancidity and preserve freshness. Antioxidants help minimize lipid oxidation and the amount of free radicals in the food, which in turn help maintain pet health by maintaining nutrient integrity, reducing digestive upset, and minimizing free radical introduction into the body. Natural antioxidants create a more consistent product and increase kibble palatability, quality, and enjoyment, without the use of synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA), and ethoxyquin which may be used as preservatives in other pet foods. Research studies have shown BHT and BHA at very high levels in the diet have toxic and carcinogenic potential in animals.

How are natural foods preserved?

Natural foods are considered fresh, healthy, safe, and highly palatable. Because they are minimally processed, high-quality, natural ingredients are nutrient dense and ensure consistent delivery of essential nutrients for maximum nutrition. Whole ingredients with minimal processing preserve nutrient integrity, including antioxidants and phytonutrients, which are easily stripped away or destroyed by processing. Natural foods provide the nutrition pets need without added artificial colors, synthetic chemicals, or preservatives.
